Subaru revived the WRX STI with the S210, but a few key details have left fans wanting more.

The current Subaru WRX was introduced in 2021. The ultimate version is the STI S210 that arrived earlier this year with a limited production of 500 units for Japan.

In March 2022, there was a startling announcement: Subaru would not produce a next-generation gas-powered WRX STI. Nearly three years later, the company appears to have had a change of heart.

Subaru has revealed an STI variant of the current WRX, called the S210 Prototype. It will only be sold in Japan, uses an automatic transmission, and makes less power than the last WRX STI.

This time around, though, it's based on a WRX S4 STI Sport R EX that Subaru doesn't offer here. And just like the S209, production is also seriously limited, although it won't be quite as rare.

The aptly named Subaru WRX STI S210 Prototype is a preview of what’s to come from Subaru’s performance arm later this year. This special edition is making its debut at the 2025 Tokyo Auto Salon.

The last version of the Subaru WRX STI to come to the U.S. was the VA, a four-door sedan that was sold here from the 2015 through the 2021 model years.

The swan-song 2021 WRX STI packed a high-output flat-four engine making 310 horsepower, but the 2024 TR has to make do with the same 271-hp, turbocharged 2.4-liter flat-four that powers other WRXs.
