The Heisman Trophy odds took a weird turn recently between Arch Manning's surprisingly poor play and the fact that Texas' biggest rival just saw their star quarterback sidelined for several weeks with a hand injury just as his national attention was growing with every Oklahoma Sooners victory.

The quarterback Mateer trailed in the Heisman race just got a surprise boost. Indiana 's Fernando Mendoza was a steep riser on his own and clinched frontrunner status entering Week 5 even before the Oklahoma star's injury. Now he has a clear lead on the rest of the country.

Even Oklahoma Attorney General Gentner Drummond chimed in with an official commendation of Dr. Shin "for single-handedly saving John Mateer's season."
