The West Regional Special Olympics Basketball Tournament took place in St. Joseph this weekend, filling the school district with Special Olympics basketball teams full of competitive spirit.

Candi Blessing, a 39-year-old athlete from Smithsburg, will represent Team USA in snowshoeing at the Special Olympics World Winter Games in Turin, Italy. Blessing has participated in the Special Olympics for over 30 years, competing in various sports and previously representing the USA at the 2014 Special Olympics USA Games.

On ski slopes in Dubai, snow parks and skating rinks in Abu Dhabi and Al Ain, 11 Emirati athletes have been training for more than a year to represent the UAE in its first Special Olympics World Winter Games.

The Mayor of Lisburn & Castlereagh, Councillor Kurtis Dickson, has sent local skiers Lucy Best and Caolan McConville off to the Special Olympics World Winter Games with the best wishes of the whole Council behind them.
