By David Shepardson March 8 (Reuters) - Waiting times in security lines at some U.S. airports extended to three hours on Sunday, as absences by Transportation Security Administration workers rose during a partial government shutdown and as spring-break travel increased.

The situation at this airport and another major one in the US is seen as a warning of what travelers across the country might face if the government shutdown continues in the coming weeks.

Screening delays created lines that stretched around William P. Hobby and Louis Armstrong airports, causing many to miss flights at the start of spring break season.

A shutdown of the Department of Homeland Security has gone into effect. That includes the Transportation Security Administration, whose officers are responsible for screening passengers and bags at airports.
