New Mexico Gov. Michelle Lujan Grisham has declared a state of emergency​ in the city of Española and nearby areas in response to what she calls "a significant surge" in violent crime and drug trafficking.

There is no “immediate” assignment to deploy the National Guard, the governor's office said, but that standard language in the governor’s executive order “is there if needed.”

Crime and drugs have gotten so bad in Española that officers can’t keep up and are overwhelmed. Crime is so bad, Governor Michelle Lujan Grisham declared a state of emergency on Wednesday, hoping to bring some relief.
