Wilfried Zaha was actually the last player to move to Old Trafford under Ferguson, who once subbed himself on for Manchester United. The Red Devils paid £15m to sign the winger from Crystal Palace back in January 2013 – but opted to loan him back to the Eagles to aid their promotion charge, which ended successfully.

After struggling to break into the side under David Moyes and then Louis van Gaal, the Red Devils opted to let the Ivorian return to Selhurst Park for a sum of just £3m – having spent £15m to bring him to Old Trafford just two years earlier as Sir Alex Ferguson’s last signing.
This, in all, appeared to have Zaha take stock and weigh the possibility of moving on. Word eventually made it the desk of Charlotte FC general manager Zoran Krneta that he wasn’t opposed to learning more about Major League Soccer. That’s when Krneta began to fall in love with the idea.
