President Donald Trump’s pick to lead the Commerce Department said Mexico and Canada can avoid new tariffs due this weekend if they clamp down on border security — while also signalling that Trump is likely to impose widespread new levies to return manufacturing to U.S. soil.

Throughout President Trump’s election campaign and even in the days following leading up to Inauguration Day, the commander in chief was pushing a heavy tariff agenda, with great emphasis on China and Mexico.

General Motors, the largest producer of cars in Mexico, won’t provide details on how it would react if President Trump imposes 25 percent tariffs from the two countries.
