PGA of America officials defended their decision to extend invitations to several members of LIV Golf to compete in this week's PGA Championship, with the governing body's CEO Derek Sprague saying "it's about having the strongest field in golf.

The two-time major championship winner and LIV Golf member earned a special exemption from the PGA of America to compete in the PGA Championship next week in North Carolina. Johnson’s previous exemption into the second major championship of the year — a five-year pass for his win at the Masters in 2020 — ended last year.

Also getting special invitations were Joaquin Niemann, a three-time winner on LIV this year, and Sergio Garcia.

Xander Schauffele is the defending PGA Championship winner, after he came out on top in the season's second major at Valhalla Golf Club in Louisville, Kentucky. Schauffele is in the field along with world No. 1 Scottie Scheffler and Rory McIlroy, who won the Masters last month.
