Hurricane Erin is still churning in the Atlantic Ocean as a Category 2 Hurricane, delivering tropical storm force winds to Turks and Caicos and parts of the Bahamas. As the storm continues to make its way north up the east coast,

Hurricane Erin is forecast to "substantially grow in size" as it moves across the western Atlantic, according to the National Hurricane Center.

New York and New Jersey are prepping for Hurricane Erin to make downfall on the U.S. coastline, and while the storm isn't going to make landfall, residents will definitely feel the impact.

Erin is expected to maintain hurricane strength through at least Friday, with its massive wind field stretching wider than previously forecast. The storm is beginning to recurve to the north and northeast, staying offshore but tracking uncomfortably close to the eastern U.S.

The Atlantic basin includes the northern Atlantic Ocean, Caribbean Sea and Gulf of America, as the Gulf of Mexico is now known in the U.S. per an order from President Trump. NOAA and the National Hurricane Center are now using Gulf of America on its maps and in its advisories.

Hurricane Erin, which started as a tropical storm west of the Cabo Verde Islands, is making its way towards the east coast — although, its core is not forecast to go over land.

Tracking Hurricane Erin, the first named storm of the Atlantic hurricane season, which weakened to a Category 3 storm early Sunday.

Though it will stay well offshore, dangerous storm surge will impact the North Carolina coast, triggering mandatory evacuations on Hatteras Island and Ocracoke Island.
