Former Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe has died, state broadcaster NHK said on Friday. Abe, 67, had been delivering a stump speech near a train station in the western city of Nara when he was shot by an assailant. The shooting of the country's best-known politician came despite Japan's strict gun laws and with campaigning under way ahead of upper house elections on Sunday.
