Using a Bible printed in 1663, Jessie Little Doe Baird revived the Wampanoag language after more than 150 years of dormancy. In 1993 she co-founded the Wopanak Language Reclamation Project using old documents to reconstruct her people's tongue. Across the nation, other women worked to preserve Native American heritage. Marie Wilcox, the last fluent speaker of Wukchumni, spent over 20 years creating a dictionary. Ella Cara Deloria recorded Sioux oral history, while Gladys Reichard documented Wiyo
