Basking sharks travel in extended families with their own ‘gourmet maps’ of feeding spots, genetic tagging reveals

Stick your nose up! When the zooplankton is plentiful, basking sharks can feed hard at the surface. They move erratically around the thickest spots of food and is spectacular to watch. In this clip whilst watching from a distance the shark turns to feed close to the boat. It was also a strong year for mackerel and a school of them are ‘boiling’ at the surface whilst they are feeding. We’re looking forward to some days like this in the summer! | Basking Shark Scotland

Today is #endangeredspeciesday and we want to fly the flag for basking sharks! They are listed as endangered on the IUCN red list and recovering after wide spread hunting in the last century. Here’s a clip of @bertiegregory & @chazgregs enjoying an encounter with basking sharks a couple summers ago. This was a pretty good day on the water with over 30 sightings. Perhaps some of the sharks that appeared on the BBC Wild Isles series this year. We’re down to our final spaces for the season ahead so
