Usually this happens in the spring time during snow melt, but because of the record rainfall over the last six weeks, I was lucky enough to catch a rare fall release. The dam was built by the Phelps Dodge corporation in 1946 and the spillways were added in 1949. It’s pretty cool to walk behind the falls and hear the roaring rush of water flowing over your head and down into into the Verde River. #arizonalif

Sunday I took a ride to Horseshoe lake & dam to see the big water release after all the rain....but it was only a trickle! 🫣😂 I should have checked the numbers before I left. Lesson learned. Not every adventure goes as planned, but it was still a great day. Horseshoe Lake is known as one of Arizona’s most remote lakes and I still had fun exploring. 📍Horseshoe Dam Only about 1 hour from North Phoenix Know before you go: 🚗 The last 8 miles is gravel road. Super bumpy. It took us about 40 minutes in our mini van. Sedans & vans can do it but I really wish we would have taken our truck, it was hard on our van. That being said - it’s not that sketchy, it’s just bumpy and there are a lot of ATV’s flying by and lots of dust so just be prepared for the drive. 4X4 not required. 💦 Water only flows when they have the dam open so make sure to check
