We currently have an original War Department printing of the Emancipation Proclamation, issued to a Union officer in the field and signed in print by E. D. Townsend and Lorenzo Thomas, exactly as these copies were distributed during the Civil War. It survives in strong, well-preserved condition for a field-issued document, a rare example of the order that carried Lincoln’s words directly into the hands of the Union Army.
